Pakistan Fashion Week in Karachi

Pakistan-Fashion-Week-Behind-Scene3-390x259The Pakistani city of Karachi is one of the world’s most violent, which is why the country’s Fashion Week — which started yesterday — was somewhat delayed. A spate of October and November attacks, which caused the deaths of 340 civilians, deterred the foreign designers that organizers had invited. And the decision was made to instead spotlight solely local talent — 32 designers from across the country, whose work premiered yesterday at the city’s luxurious Marriott Hotel.

Chief organizer Ayesha Tammy Haq explained why they felt they must go on with the show: “We, the members of Fashion Pakistan, feel great to host this colorful event at difficult times of our history when the entire nation is waging a battle against militancy.”
So on Wednesday,  gorgeous models pranced and preened, sashayed down the runway in luxe fabrics — batting paint-heavy eyelashes. Backstage, make-up artists ran around panting, tracking down lip-gloss, while hairstylists were never without mouthfuls of barrettes. Meanwhile, lining the sides of the stage were Pakistan’s elite — the glitterati of a country where most women observe varying degrees of Islamic codes of dress that require them to cover up.
